Jobs not so well done on Sunday

  1. Special teams coverage. The Texans’ defense allowed only 190 yards. The special teams allowed 147. They consistently gave Indianapolis good field position with their inability to contain returner Quan Bray on kickoffs and punts.
  2. Offense. You can’t be too critical considering they had to use their fourth quarterback Sunday, a reject from a Dallas team that is 4-10, don’t have Arian Foster and have seldom been able to use the same offensive line from one Sunday to the next. But after failing to score a touchdown the previous Sunday in a loss to New England, the Texans went three quarters without scoring one against the Colts.
  3. Management. Maybe it was general manager Rick Smith. Maybe it was coach Bill O’Brien. Maybe it was both in conjunction with owner Bob McNair. But the decision to place quarterback Tom Savage on injured reserve so that he couldn’t return this season after the final preseason game, even though he probably would have missed only four to six weeks with the shoulder injury, was a mistake. They might get away with it if Brian Hoyer can return after his second concussion this season, T.J. Yates can return from a knee injury or Brandon Weeden is as serviceable as he was Sunday. But Savage was deprived of valuable playing time this season.
  4. Baltimore Ravens. They couldn’t come close to stopping the Kansas City Chiefs’ momentum in a 34-14 loss Sunday. The Texans need for someone to beat the Chiefs, who have an eight-game winning streak, and knock them out of the first wild card position in the AFC. If the Texans win the division, they probably would play host to the Chiefs in the first round of the playoffs. The Texans have already lost to them once at home this season. They would much rather face the New York Jets.
  5. I’ll take the fifth on this one. After beating the Colts for the first time in Indianapolis in franchise history and claiming first place in the AFC South, the Texans deserve a break.
